
Service of Process
The Sheriff's Office is mandated to serve all papers directed to it by the Courts or private litigants and files returns with the courts. The Sheriff and appointed deputies serve over 100,000 court papers annually. These documents include
summonses, court process, court ordered attachments and evictions and other related papers. The deputies are supported by an administrative staff who maintain the tracking process in the Sheriff's summons component in
the Criminal Justice Information System and perform related clerical duties.
The current fee for service of process are as follows:

Note: Out of State Papers - At least one copy of the summons and complaint
with a cover letter that describes any specific restrictions on service or other
pertinent information. Also include location of person to be served and any
other available information.

Attachment Unit

The Attachment Unit is responsible for carrying out the
execution of a variety of writs, including Writs of Execution, Attachments
before Judgment, Replevins, Distress for rent and other specified court orders.
This unit is also responsible for the attachment and/or seizure of personal
property and the attachment of real property, as it pertains to certain writs.
Sheriff sales are held by public auction using an auctioneer designated by the
Sheriff's Office. The purpose of the sale is to sell assets to satisfy court
ordered judgments. The actual process of executing these various writs will vary
with the type of writ and the instructions from the plaintiff and/or the
plaintiff's attorney.
All attachments, replevins and sales executed by the Sheriff's
Office will be conducted in accordance with the Annotated Code of Maryland,
Maryland Rules and individual Sheriff's Office regulations.
