Sheriff's Office Recognized for its
Contributions During the Sniper Incident
During an October 1, 2003 ceremony the
Montgomery County Sheriff's Office was recognized for its participation during
the Sniper Shooting incidents which occurred in Montgomery County. Below is a
copy of the certificate which was presented to Sheriff Kight by County Executive
Douglas M. Duncan and Acting Chief of the Montgomery County Police William C.
O'Toole.
During the Sniper investigation the
Montgomery County Sheriff's Office Special Response Team was assigned full time
to respond to potential threats and to work with Local, State and Federal
Authorities during the investigation. Additional Deputies were also assigned by
the Sheriff's Office to assist with security at schools and other high profile
locations within Montgomery County. Deputies who routinely are assigned to work
out in the community also aided in vehicle check points, perimeters and
responded to suspicious activity.
The Sheriff's Office continues to
redirect resources as necessary to assist when there are high demands placed on
Local Law Enforcement Agencies. Most recently Deputies were reassigned to assist
during the damage caused by Hurricane Isabel. Deputies were assigned to direct
traffic at intersections and to assist with the distribution of dry ice during
the power outages.
The Sheriff's Office under Sheriff
Kight is the second largest Law Enforcement agency serving Montgomery County,
Maryland and will continue to provide necessary services to the citizens of
Montgomery County.
