SECTIONS
ADMINISTRATION

This section provides general administrative support to the office including recruiting and hiring, training, background investigations, payroll, purchasing, internal investigations, automation and budget related functions. The Administration Section provides technical support for Sheriff's summons, domestic violence, and warrant components of the CJIS (Criminal Justice Information System) on the County's mainframe.

The Administrative Section also oversees the Sheriff's compliance with recognized accreditation standards. The Assistant Sheriff directs research and development of policies, procedures and regulations to meet professional standards developed for law enforcement agencies.

The Sheriff's Office participates in school functions, civic association meetings and serves on commissions and committees. The Sheriff's Office participates in environmental crimes task forces as needed and participates in other public safety agencies applicant, promotional and disciplinary boards. Administrative personnel organize in-service and specialized training of deputies and the annual weapons qualification, as required by the Maryland Police Training Commission.

The Sheriff's Office became accredited in 1995 by the Commission on Accreditation of Law Enforcement Agencies after meeting numerous stringent standards established for law enforcement agencies nationally. In August 2000 the Sheriff's Office under went a successful on site evaluation.

The Sheriff's Office has approved staffing of over 165 employees consisting of deputies, civil administrative and clerical support personnel. The annual budget is approximately thirteen million dollars and the office serves a population of approximately 873,000 residents

The Sheriff's Office, under Sheriff Kight, became the first Sheriff's Office in the State of Maryland to be accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies. The Sheriff's Office received its initial accreditation in November of 1995 and underwent a successful on site evaluation in August 2000 . In order to receive and maintain accreditation the Sheriff's Office has to demonstrate voluntarily that they meet professionally-recognized criteria for excellence in management and service delivery.
